What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication? (AAC)

Augmentative and alternative communication includes all of the ways we share our ideas and feelings without talking.

AAC includes simple systems such as pictures, gestures and pointing, as well as more complex techniques involving powerful computer technology. Individuals with severe speech or language delays may need AAC to help them communicate. AAC can be “no-tech”, “low-tech” or “high-tech.” (asha.org, communicationmatters.org.uk)
